10 Uncommon Hiligaynon Words

The Hiligaynon Language also colloquially referred often by most of its speakers as Ilonggo, is an Austronesian regional language spoken in the Philippines. It is mainly used in Western Visayas. Most people find the ethnoliguistic group Hiligaynon to be malambing (adoring). But, is it true that most of the Hiligaynons (people who speak Hiligaynon) are not fluent in their language? Well, here are some uncommon Hiligaynon words that are certainly new to you. If you happen to know this words, then you’re an expert in speaking Hiligaynon.

1. Nagapakigkatipan (covenant)  a formal and serious agreement or promise .

Example: “Nagapakigkatipan ako sa imo para sa kalinong.”

Translation: “I make a covenant with you for peace.”

2. Masuay (indisputable) – impossible to question or doubt.

Example: “Bangod indi masuay ini nga mga butang, dapat magpakatawhay kamo kag indi magpadasudasu.”

Translation: “Since these things are indisputable, you should keep calm and not act rashly.”

3. Nagpakigsapol (consulted) – to talk about something with someone in order to make a decision.

Example: “Nagpakigsapol siya sa iya mga alagad.”

Translation: “He consulted with his servants.”

4. Lebadura (leaven) – a substance (such as yeast)  that makes dough rise and become light before it is baked.

Example: “Ang diutay nga lebadura nagapakumbo s linamas.”

Translation: “A little leaven ferments the whole batch  of dough.”

5. Kunop (outer garments) – a piece of clothing.

Example: “Ginhumlad sang kalabanan nga tawo ang ila kunop sa dalan. ”

Translation: “Most of the crowd spread  their outer garments on the road. ”

6. Sapay (fat) – having a lot of extra flesh on your body.

Example: “Ginkuha nila ang mga sapay sang baka.”

Translation: “They gather the pieces of fat of the bull.”

7. Malantipon (skillful) – or good direction.

Example: “Ang tawo nga may paghangop nagapangayo sing malantipon nga giya sa iban.”

Translation: “A man of understanding acquires skillful direction from others.”

8. Nagatamay (contempt) – a feeling that someone or something is not worthy of any respect or approval.

Example: “Pakamalauton ang tawo nga nagatamay sa iya amay kag sa iya iloy. ”

Translation: “Cursed is the one who treats his father or his mother with contempt.”

9. Pagpangyaguta (spitefulness) – having or showing a desire to harm, anger, or defeat someone.

Example: “Ang pagpangyaguta isa ka malain nga buhat. ”

Translation: “Spiteful act is a bad deed. ”

10. Agalon (master) – a person who exercises control or authority.

Example: “Ang iya agalon lang ang makahukom kon bala maayo siya ukon malain. ”

Translation: “Only his master can judge whether his good or bad. ”
